The purpose of this project was to design and illustrate an animated movie poster, similar to the Superman (2025) “Look Up” poster. These types of posters are usually seen in malls, online, and at higher end movie theaters. For this poster, I wanted to use a fictional movie on my interpretation of the Black Knight. This version of the Black Knight is said to be cursed with mortality, causing him to be shunned by society and live a lonely life. However, it also makes him a target of formidable foes who believe that if they defeat the night, they will gain his immortality.
The first step of this process was to thumbnail still posters. During this step, I wanted to focus on the character’s pose, the scene, and title placement.
After selecting what I thought to be the most striking of the thumbnails, I created a rough sketch and imported it into Krita, where I digitally painted the character and scene.
After the scene and character were illustrated, both were exported in segments to make their animations easier to manage in After Effects. Once in after effects, the puppet tool was used on the Black Knight’s cape to make it look like it is alive, similar to Spawn’s, and on the Knight’s head to make it look like his head is turning. The puppet tool was also used on the background to make the environment feel alive.
