Rol-3r Commercial
The purpose of this project was to design a commercial with an early 2000s athletic featuring an animated 3D model, the Rol-3r. The process involved researching character focused commercials, character design, character rigging in Blender, character modeling in Blender, 3D texturing in Substance Painter, and 3D tracking both in Blender and After Effects.
Mood Board
As Seen on TV Reference
The first step was to design a character/product based on my research and creative brief. I had recently watched Wall-E when designing the Rol-3r which influenced its design in that the character transforms into a primitive shape; in this case a sphere. Once a character/product was designed, I researched early 2000s “as seen on TV” commercials as a visual reference.
Rol-3r Storyboards
After conducting my research, I moved on to story boards, making sure to keep the pacing/flow of the early 2000s “as seen on TV” commercials. Once the story boards were completed, I moved on to filming and 3D tracking, which involved finding a location, taking note of the lighting for the HDRI, and importing the footage into After Effects where it would be tracked.

During this process, I was also modeling, rigging, and texturing the character/product. After the track data was imported to Blender, I animated the Rol-3r transforming and walking to show how it would generally function.

Once the animations were rendered, I brought everything back into After Effects to compile everything and to add effects that would give the final product an early 2000s visual.
