The purpose of the Grimblos project was to create a character focused commercial for a children's cereal brand featuring the mascot Grimble. The process involved researching character focused commercials, character design, character rigging in After Effects, and character animation in After Effects.




The mood board features final product shots to give a baseline of what to aim for with this project. I wanted to lean into the Red Bull style/flow/delivery featured in their own commercials for this project. The mood board also features the main character of this project, who dictates the overall visual style for this project.


I knew that I wanted to go with the space theme. I then began to design some simple characters that leaned into the primitive shapes. After a few minutes of doodling, I designed Grimble the Space Wizard.
I then went into Adobe Illustrator to begin creating an illustration of Grimble. The primary shapes used were ellipses to form his head and hat brim, while triangles were used to make his body and the point of his hat.

The first half of this project was to develop an animated logo for the brand. Most children's cereal brands have a bold and playful type logo. I wanted to capture the whimsy and magic of the character and brand in the final logo, which is why the logo features bubble lettering and magic stars.

Once the brand had a logo, work on the commercial could begin. As stated, this project takes inspiration from the way Red Bull commercials play out; setup, conflict, resolution/punch-line, to product placement. Unlike Red Bull, the target audience is children, so the conflict is a silly slime monster who is magically transformed into a slime dog with the magic cereal Grimblos.
